Once BCIR has been
achieved it could be used to introduce
parliamentary reform. Subject to the people's will, reforms
might include:
Ending the whipping system and caucus solidarity conventions that effectively deny MP’s the right to seek and represent the will of their electorate.
Reducing the number of MP’s.
Re-establishing the Upper House as a check on government actions.
Requiring the executive to be elected by secret ballot from all MPs, not just the majority party.
Limiting the number of consecutive years a person may spend in parliament.
Introducing the ‘recall’ – an electorate's right to sack a poorly performing MP and hold a by-election.
Limiting MP benefits to their time as people’s representatives. |
